My TTRPG Back Story

OG Dungeons & Dragons Materials
Yes! I still have my OG source material from back in the day!

Hey there, fellow adventurer! Welcome to Roll Stats, the place where old-school tabletop role-playing games (TTRPGs) meet modern insights, deep dives, and in-depth discussions. Whether you’re a grizzled veteran of B/X D&D or someone looking to dip their toes into the world of OSR (Old-School Renaissance) and indie RPGs, you’re in the right place.

I’m Bill, and I’ve been rolling dice and running games since 1981. My love for tabletop RPGs started with Basic/Expert Dungeons & Dragons (B/X), and from that first dungeon crawl, I was hooked. The thrill of improvising rulings over rules, surviving on wits and creativity instead of mechanics, and diving into dangerous, unpredictable worlds shaped the way I run and play games to this day.

At Roll Stats, I review, analyze, and break down some of the best (and sometimes underrated) TTRPG systems, mechanics, and adventures. My goal? To help you run fast, fun, and immersive games while celebrating the spirit of classic role-playing.

What You’ll Find at Roll Stats

This isn’t just a review site—it’s a place for tabletop RPG enthusiasts who love to explore new systems, revisit old-school classics, and fine-tune their craft as Dungeon Masters (DMs) and Game Masters (GMs). Here’s what you can expect:

🎲 Deep Dives & Reviews of TTRPG Systems

I take a no-nonsense approach to reviewing tabletop RPG systems. Whether it’s a classic OSR, an innovative indie RPG, or a new twist on a familiar favorite, I break down:

  • Core mechanics: How the system works and what sets it apart.
  • Character creation: How fast (or complex) it is to jump into the game.
  • Combat flow: Is it tactical and crunchy, or fast and deadly?
  • Exploration and resource management: How does the game handle things like dungeons, wilderness travel, and problem-solving?
  • The overall vibe: Does it capture the feeling of danger, discovery, and adventure?

From Moldvay B/X and AD&D to Shadowdark, Old-School Essentials (OSE), Dungeon Crawl Classics (DCC), Lamentations of the Flame Princess (LotFP), Mothership, and more, I explore the best the tabletop RPG world has to offer.

📖 Adventure Reviews & Analysis

A great system is one thing, but what about the adventures? Old-school RPGs live and die by their modules, and I love diving deep into:

  • Classic D&D adventures – From Keep on the Borderlands to The Lost City, I take a look at the most iconic dungeon crawls ever written.
  • OSR & indie adventures – There are tons of amazing modern adventures that capture the old-school feel while bringing new ideas to the table. If it’s deadly, weird, and dripping with atmosphere, I’m there.
  • What makes an adventure great – From dungeon design and encounter balance to player agency and open-world elements, I break down what works (and what doesn’t).

🧙‍♂️ DM/GM Tips & Advice

Being a DM/GM is the best job in the world, but it’s also a challenge. I share practical advice, hard-earned lessons, and tips to help you:

  • Run faster, more fluid sessions – Keeping things moving is key, especially in old-school games where combat is lethal and time is a resource.
  • Make rulings, not just rules – The best DMs know how to improvise and adapt without slowing the game down. I’ll show you how to do that while keeping things fair and fun.
  • Create meaningful challenges – From deadly traps and puzzles to smart, dynamic encounters, we’ll cover ways to keep players engaged and thinking creatively.
  • Balance narrative and sandbox play – Old-school games thrive when the world feels alive and players are free to explore. I’ll show you how to create a setting that reacts to player choices while still keeping things structured enough to run smoothly.

🛠️ TTRPG Philosophy & Game Design Discussion

I love talking shop when it comes to game mechanics, adventure design, and the philosophy behind what makes RPGs great. Topics include:

  • Why old-school gaming still works today – And why so many modern games are embracing those mechanics again.
  • The balance between player skill and character skill – Should games rely on rolling dice, or should player decisions matter more?
  • Sandbox vs. railroad playstyles – How much control should the GM have, and when should they step back?
  • House rules & homebrew mechanics – The best OSR and indie games encourage tweaking the rules to fit your table. I’ll share some of my favorite custom mechanics, random tables, and house rules.

Why Old-School & OSR RPGs?

You might be wondering: Why focus on old-school games when modern TTRPGs exist? The answer is simple—old-school games still offer something unique.

  • They emphasize player creativity over rules – You won’t find pages of skill lists in a B/X game. Want to solve a problem? Describe what you do, not what you roll.
  • They have real consequences – Death is a real possibility. Bad decisions have weight. Every torch and ration matters. That tension makes every choice exciting.
  • They reward exploration and problem-solving – The best OSR adventures aren’t about stat blocks—they’re about thinking outside the box and taking risks.
  • They encourage improvisation and rulings – You don’t have to memorize a rulebook. The DM has the final say and can adapt as needed.

If you love fast-paced, high-risk, and deeply immersive RPG experiences, then OSR and indie RPGs will be right up your alley.
